Research finds China to be top carbon emitter

April 14th, 2008 · No Comments

University of California research suggests that China’s CO2 emissions may have already surpassed that of the US in 2006-2007. This would make China the world’s largest polluter for over an year to date. The research team will publish their work in the Journal of Environment Economics and Management. To China’s defense, it should be noted that on average, each Chinese person is responsible for 3.5 tonnes of CO2 per year compared to 10.5 tonnes for people from the developed Western countries. This is 3 times more than the Chinese. However the notion of shared but differentiated responsibilities should be adopted as the world tackles its pollution together.
