Palau President Tommy Remengesau Jr. gave his last State of the Republic address on Monday. He mentioned amongst other things the success of the Micronesia Challenge, which he initiated in November of 2005. It calls for the conservation 30% of near shore coastal waters and 20% of forest land by 2020. Other countries who signed up include the Federated States of Micronesia, the Marshall Islands, and also US administered Guam and Northern Mariana Islands. Remengesau has 9 months left of his second and final term in office. Palau’s Presidential elections occur at the same time as in the US.
